Aarti Gupta

Aarti Gupta is Lecturer in International Environmental Politics in the Environmental Policy Group of Wageningen University’s Department of Social Sciences, the Netherlands. She is also vice-chair of the COST Action ISO802, Transformations in Global Environmental Governance, and co-coordinator of the thematic cluster on environmental governance within the Netherlands Research School of Socioeconomic and Natural Sciences of the Environment (SENSE). Before joining Wageningen in 2006, Aarti held pre-doctoral and post-doctoral positions at Harvard and Columbia Universities in the US. In recent years, she has also combined academic pursuits with working for development cooperation and civil society organizations, including with the United Nations Development Programme (New York), Transparency International (Berlin) and Oxfam Netherlands (the Hague). She received her M.A in Political Science from the University of Chicago and her PhD in Environmental Studies from Yale University.

Within the field of global environmental politics, her research has focused on norms of global risk governance, interlinkages between trade-environment; and the role of science, information, knowledge and transparency in global environmental governance. She has published in a variety of journals, including Environment and Global Environmental Politics, with articles forthcoming in 2009 in Futures and International Environmental Agreements. She is on the editorial board of the journal Global Environmental Politics (2008 – present).

Aarti has received grants and support for her research from a variety of sources, including the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Teresa Heinz Foundation (Scholar for Environmental Research awards); and Resources from the Future (Joseph L. Fischer award), among others. Aarti’s teaching at Wageningen University covers global environmental politics and environmental policy analysis and evaluation. She has carried out consultancy work for a variety of organizations, most recently for the United Nations Environment Programme and the Global Environment Facility.
